- Published 17/03/2010
Internazionale (Inter Milan) has beaten Chelsea 1-0 at Stamford Bridge to book a place in the last eight of the Champions League, making it a triumphant return to London for Jose Mourinho.
Chelsea came into the match having to overturn a 2-1 first leg deficit against their old friend in Jose Mourinho, who was seen shaking the hands of Chelsea players in the tunnel before the match.
The match started with only a few chances in the opening half-hour. However, the match turned with Chelsea in the ascendancy creating the best chances of the first half. Notably a Didier Drogba shot being blocked by Maicon from 10 yards. Chelsea continued to push and if not for some last ditch challenges from Walter Samuel, on more than one occasion, would have been in front at the break.
In the second half Chelsea had the first chance through Malouda who was never going to beat Julio Cesar at the near post.
Despite Chelsea being the team that needed to score, it was Inter who created a number of good chances through Wesley Sneijder.
First Sneidjer put Goran Pandev through the heart of the defence with a lovely back-heel. Pandev, who was one-on-one with the keeper, took one touch too many and allowed Zhirkov to get across and make a last ditch challenge. From the resulting corner Milito had his shot saved from a tight angle. Milito had another chance shortly after when Sneijder’s lovely lofted pass fell to his feet only for him to put his shot wide.
Inter’s next chance fell for Thiago Motta who had a free header at the far post. However he couldn’t keep his header down and it flew just over the bar.
Chelsea brought on the goalscorer from the first leg, Salomon Kalou who first created a chance for Anelka before himself blasting over the bar.
Inter had looked like scoring all night and on 78 minutes Samuel Eto’o finally put the ball in the back of the net, to Mourinho’s relief. Sneijder lofted a lovely ball to Eto’o’s feet. Eto’o held off his marker before driving his shot past Turnbull and into the net.
The night went from bad to worse for Chelsea, as Drogba was shown a red card for stamping on Thiago Motta in the 87th minute.
Turnbull saved a shot from Eto’o in injury time to ensure that the score was only 1-0 at full-time.
In Wednesday’s other match CSKA Moscow caused a surprise by beating Sevilla 2-1 in Spain.
There are two other matches to be completed in the Round of Sixteen with Olympiacos travelling to Bordeaux having to overturn a 1-0 deficit and Barcelona hosting Stuttgart after a 1-1 draw in Germany.
The draw for the Quarter-finals and Semi-finals will take place on the Friday the 19th of March.
So far Arsenal, Bayern Munich, Lyon, Manchester United, CSKA Moscow and Internazionale are through to the Quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League with another two clubs still to join them.
