DARWIN Rovers and Alice Springs club Celtic will meet for FFA Cup inclusion after the Rovers beat Mindil Aces 3-2 in last night’s Norzone qualifier.
The Rovers came from a goal down to beat Mindil, who lost few friends with a courageous display against their more experienced opponents.
A Luke Wills scorcher set the Rovers back on their heels as early as the seventh minute, his swerving left foot beating Rovers goalkeeper Matt Ashton before bending the back of the net.
Mindil ‘keeper George Boeck made two saves in 30 seconds four minutes later to the Rovers an equaliser, one from a free kick cleared a congested forward line before Boeck’s timely intervention.
Rovers striker Carl Marshall was denied by an advancing Boeck in the 26th minute and goal scorer Wills was on hand to clear off the line after a goalmouth scramble a minute later.
But the Rovers continued to threaten with long balls to Marshall, a tactic Mindil skipper Jacob Meehan-Lee and his defenders controlled with relative ease.
Marshall was on hand to sidefoot a classic goal in the 30th minute for the Rovers after Daniel Smith turned provider, levelling the score at 1-1 when the whistle ended the half.
Rovers’ raids into the Mindil back half took its tool in the 60th minute when the under siege Aces defence scrambled the ball into their own net.
Matt Crawley turned poacher in the 70th minute when he crashed the ball home from a metre out following another goalmouth scramble to give the Rovers a 3-1 lead.
But any thoughts of a comfortable last 20 minutes for the Irishmen were crushed in the 85th minute when a looping header from Meehan-Lee beat Ashton at the near post to make it 3-2.
A Sean McCarthy miss from close for the Rovers and a clearance off the line from Mindil’s Lachlan Williams in the last five minutes brought down the curtain in a typically hard fought Cup game.
