Media Release - Crowds back for Rd 3 this weekend

Thursday 11June, 2020

Interest in Football in the Northern Territory has never been higher with global audiences tuning into the first weekend of competition since the COVID-19 restrictions were eased.

Global audiences watched the livestreams of the Men’s and Women’s Premier League games and media coverage of the first weekend of action since the global pandemic made headlines in some of the world’s biggest media outlets, including national coverage on the TODAY Show in Australia, interviews on TalkSport in the United Kingdom, an article on FIFA.com and a feature piece in Italy’s biggest sports newspaper the Corriere Dello Sport.

FNT Chief Executive Bruce Stalder said last weekend showcased Darwin and the Northern Territory to the world and he was looking forward to another great weekend of football starting tomorrow.

“We are proud that we were one of the first cities in the world to welcome back crowds to our games and the first of any code in Australia as Football Returns.”

“We received unprecedented exposure last weekend and we will continue to showcase our Men’s and Women’s Premier League this weekend with all games broadcast live on FNT’s Facebook and YouTube channels,” he said.

On Friday night Fox Sports Commentator Teo Pellizzeri will join the broadcast to call the action for the Men’s Premier League match between Darwin Hearts, who had their first win of the season last weekend, against Port Darwin FC.

Broadcasts will continue throughout the weekend with Saturday’s 4pm game between Mindil Aces and University Azzurri and on Sunday at 8pm, early front runners Casuarina take on Hellenic.

Mr Stalder said it was great to see crowds back at the football last weekend and encouraged fans to get to Darwin Football Stadium this weekend to support their local teams.

The Women’s Premier League continues with round 3 action kicking off at 6:30pm on Friday night, with both Litchfield and University looking for their first points of the season. On Saturday at 6pm, Casuarina and Hellenic AC, who both have perfect starts to the season go head to head and at 5:30pm on Sunday NT Yapas take on Mindil Aces.
