Gates open to crowds in season opener

Wednesday 3 June 2020 - Football Northern Territory will this weekend recommence competitive football, becoming the first state or territory in Australia to see a resumption of play after the COVID-19 restrictions were implemented.

The Women’s and Men’s Premier League re-start the season in a Friday night double header at Darwin Football Stadium. The games will be open to spectators, one of the first football games in the world to be played in front of a crowd since the COVID-19 restrictions.

The weekend fixtures commence with an historic evening in Darwin on Friday night with the first ever Women’s Premier League meeting between newly promoted NT Yappa’s, Australia’s only indigenous women’s team playing the Premier competition and Hellenic Athletic Women, current WPL champions and premiers.

In another first for Football NT, the game will be available on SBS’ The World Game website as well as the FFA’s Youtube, Facebook and Twitter sites. Commentary will feature respected ABC Darwin broadcaster Shannon Byrne, with special commentary by former Socceroo and SBS Chief Football Analyst Craig Foster.

The Men’s Premier League will complete the double header on Friday with last year’s Grand Finalists Mindil Aces taking on Hellenic Athletic Men.

The game will also be livestreamed on FNT and FFA’s Facebook and YouTube platforms with commentary from one of Australia’s most renowned broadcasters, Fox Sports’ Simon Hill. FNT Technical Director and former A-League player John Tambouras will provide analysis during the game.
